Less than 48 hours after Lakers owner Jim Buss gave Mike Brown a vote of confidence, the Lakers fired Brown as coach after the team’s 1-4 start. Brown coached the Lakers for 71 games during his Lakers’ tenure, 11 shy of a full season’s worth.
The Lakers were 41-25 in Brown’s first season, losing to Oklahoma City in the second round of the playoffs. The playoff exit prompted the Lakers to add several prominent players to their roster including Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Antawn Jamison to contend in the West.
Brown would coach Nash all of 1 full game.
While it may be said that Brown didn’t have enough of a sample size to see if he could right the ship, I think it was the correct move. Brown has been fortunate to coach 5 (LeBron, Kobe, Shaq, Nash and Howard) of the greatest players of our time and has consistently shown that he can’t manage their skillful games or their egos.
The bottom line is, the Lakers have the highest payroll in the league, coming in just over $100 million and having the worst record in the Western Conference is sufficient enough with the talent Los Angeles has on the roster.
The Lakers host Golden State tonight at Staples Center.
